Hello there Phil,

Although I was indeed not very “begeistert” of the espresso -to put it mildly- I might just take you up on that offer whenever I’ll be back in Essen. I’ve read so many positive stories on the place that I was just… stunned to see the place packed with such bad quality and service. Although the reason might be that staff was unable to cope with all the people during lunchtime, this can hardly be an excuse. After all, I only timed the brew time of the espressos upon being surprised by the short time of it.

Considering the fact that you keep track of the internet to see what’s being written, as you also did on Kaffee-Netz.de, you take pride in your products in general and coffee especially. However, any well trained staff would recognize the fact something is not going right and would re-adjust grind, dosing, tamp or whatever is causing the problem: something I’m not sure of, as I’d expect some sour under-extracted liquid, and not a bitter “burnt rubber” espresso I got.

I’m inclined to believe you are perfectly capable of making an espresso -which is why I’d gladly try one of you- but there’s a leap to be made in staff training. There’s no excuse for that, I’d say.

Mmmmyeahwell…light Yirga on the aeropress…it’s discutable…I like…
We are now rocking the fabulastic Zimbabwe Perzuzu on an even more delicate extraction…freshly baked applecake start and a subtle mandarin-juice finish…spring-coffee to chase away the nasty winter-blues…

Thanks for that addition. I in fact have read about one of their stores being kicked out of the chain and parties even taking it to a judge, as the place was still styled like a typical Bagels & Beans. Guess that was this one. I’ll add a notice to the post!

Definitely the best specialty coffee bar this city has, right on the front side of this Central Station.
If you have to wait for a few minutes, be sure to get your shot of espresso here. They can pull great shots for you, different blends you can choose from.
Also, if you have a few minutes more, make sure you ask for a cup of drip coffee. It’s worth the wait and they can tell you everything about the coffee they serve you.
These guys show absolute passion for coffee in everything from latte art to vac pots.

True. Thankfully most of the ones near me actually do good coffee, although you do get bum ones from the good places sometimes which sucks. Costa Coffee is the worst we had. Had coffee there once and never went back. It was allegedly a latte, Me thinks they just shoved a scoopful of soil into the cup and added hot water with a shot of milk. Never again. I’ve heard of an earthy smelling coffee but I’m pretty sure it’s not literally meant to mean mud flavoured.
